Brief History

The endeavor that eventually led to the formation of Overlook Software, Inc. began in September, 1996. At that time, practicing clinical endocrinologists (Charles G. Gegick, MD, FACP and Michael D. Altheimer, MD, FACE) in full-time private practice (Greensboro Endocrinology and Diabetes, Greensboro, NC) developed a relational database to organize and track individual and population data for all of their diabetes patients. They became increasingly aware that the use of this population-based data-driven approach was systematically improving the quality of care they were providing. By late 1997, the impressive results of this innovative effort led to a decision to design and develop a commercial software product to make this methodology widely available to the diabetes care community. Overlook Software, Inc. was formed in 1998 for that purpose.

DiaTrends has been in continuous development since 1998. Version 1.2.41 was released in 1999. Version 1.2.82 was released in 2002, version 2.0.32 in December 2003, version 2.1.25 in April 2005 and version 3.1.29 in May 2006. Our latest version (4.1.36), with many new and updated features, was released in October 2007.  Additional enhancements are in development, with the next major release planned for 2008.

"DiaTrends: An Outcomes Initiative" is an nationwide diabetes patient registry project conducted by Overlook Software, Inc. Physicians participating in this innovative project submit their patient-blinded data (stripped of all patient-identifiable data using the "DiaTrends Blinded Data Export Utility") on a regular basis to Overlook Software, which aggregates and analyzes the data, and then sends newsletters to all participating physicians summarizing the aggregate data.  This project has been underway since 2002.

Highlights of Our Publications, Presentations and Citations

  • The innovative approach of our endocrinologist-developers to diabetes management (using DiaTrends in their busy endocrinology practice) was featured in the October, 1999 "Physicians and Computers" magazine (cover story).
  • We have had manuscripts published in "Endocrine Practice" (5/2000 and 5/2001) describing the improvements we have seen in our endocrinology practice's HbA1c and lipid parameters since using DiaTrends.
  • We have done a number of presentations, including a workshop at the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists annual meeting in Atlanta in 2000, and American Diabetes Association abstracts and poster presentations in 2001 and 2002.
  • The developers of DiaTrends published an article using DiaTrends to compare the long-term effects of two thiazolidinediones on glycemic control and cardiovascular risk factors ("Current Medical Research and Opinion" 2004).
  • DiaTrends was presented at the general sessions of the ADA Postgraduate Course in New York in 2003 and in San Francisco in 2004.
  • In addition, Overlook Software, in strategic partnership with a pharmaceutical company, has developed a nationwide blinded registry of over 14,000 diabetes patients.  Physician enrollment in that innovative project ("DiaTrends:  An Outcomes Initiative") is ongoing.
  • DiaTrends was reviewed in "Medical Software Reviews" in Sept/Oct 2002, where the following key points were emphasized:
    • "The interface is very intuitive and easy to use."
    • "In terms of the actual operation and features, this is a very rich system. On the input side, data entry is logical and complete with multiple reminder flags."
    • "On the output side, the report generation is superb, having a rich variety of patient and practice related information."
    • "Overall, this is a mature product which would be of great benefit in an office that is heavily oriented to diabetes management."
    • "It [DiaTrends] offers a rich set of tools and reports to improve diabetes patient and provider care. It is highly recommended."
  • DiaTrends tied for first place (with a score of 21 out of a possible 22) in a summary review of Windows-based diabetes management software published in "The Diabetes Educator" in March/April 2003.
  • "The Patient-Centered Endocrinology Practice" newsletter of September 2005 had a cover story describing how DiaTrends has helped endocrinologists enhance care, track outcomes and empower their patients.
  • "Diabetes Management Software Aids Physicians" appeared in "Sweet Talk – The Animas Insulin Pump Newsletter," Spring/Summer 2006.
